Sweet Wedding Idea - The Creative Candy Buffet

There are so many trends when it comes to wedding accessories, some of which are cute table decorations, a seashell at each setting, a personalized shot glass, etc. However, too many of those cute ideas quickly go unappreciated by your guests. Something the guest will actually use, enjoy, and appreciate is a wedding candy buffet!

One of the great things about doing a candy buffet is that the candy is not only a unique wedding favor, it also serves as part of the food, decoration, personal themes, and fun spirit of the wedding.

Wedding Favor

Add a few decorative boxes, paper cones, or colorful candy bags sitting beside the buffet. Voila! You have an instant party favor that your guests can fill with their favorite candies and take home with them. Plus, leftover candy is a lot more useful to you than leftover coasters or koozies!

Decoration

When picking your candy, consider your wedding colors and theme. There are lots of websites that have candy available by color or by theme. The types of candy, shapes, and colors can all be used to solidify your wedding decor. Think of it as your final, and tasty, way to tie the wedding all together. Any theme can also be made more noticeable and memorable by expanding it to your candy selection; for example, custom fortune cookies might work well with an Asian theme. Many candies can have a name, message, or even photo printed on it.

Presentation of the candy buffet is also a form of decoration. Display the candies at different heights in at least 7 different candy jars, vases, bowls, etc... A few dessert stands can easily give you the different levels. Put an interesting scoops in each candy variety. Add a few wonderfully whimsical signs and you have an interesting and delightful tablescape. The sky is the limit... get creative.

Have you ever wondered why you do what you do?

For me the question reads "Why do I choose to be a Wedding DJ?"

My answer is typically short and sweet - I enjoy helping couples have the wedding they deserve - Magical, Memorable, and Magnificent. (Sounds good right? It's truly how I see my "job", which I love :-)

Today I was reminded afresh, why I do what I do; however, I find that after reading the email we received from Kirbi and Ryan (an unbelievably cute couple from 2009), that my "short answer" above, is actually a much shorter answer than I thought. One simple word - Love.

I do what I do because of love ... and for the romance and promise that spoken in two words - I Do

It was bound to happen sometime... (aka - Only in Texas :-)

Well, after 10+ years as wedding DJs, we have finally had served up at a recent wedding - the infamous Red Velvet Armadillo groom's cake!

Let's start with just a bit about the history of the grooms cake (I promise to keep it brief)...

The tradition of grooms' cakes began in the southern states, and was originally a dark fruitcake that was packaged in individual boxes and given as gifts. Wedding favors have taken this honored place in the wedding, and the grooms cake has evolved into a tradition for couples everywhere. Contemporary weddings often plan for a special cake for the groom, and can range from a deep-dark chocolate, to creamy cheesecake, to anything that is the groom's absolute favorite dessert. (See! Only one short paragraph)

Now back to the armadillo in question - The popularity of the movie Steel Magnolias, the uniqueness of the cake, and the comedic lines surrounding the cake in the movie ("It's got gray icing, I can't even begin to think how you make gray icing" - M'Lynn about the red-velvet armadillo grooms cake) have made the armadillo grooms cake popular years after the movie's 1989 release.

People choose armadillos as a grooms cake for reasons other than its appearance in the movie, of course. Many Texans (that's us folks!) embrace the armadillo as a mascot, since it is the state mammal of Texas. Since grooms cakes are often fun, quirky, or unique, a "bleeding armadillo cake" as it's also know, can be a perfect choice, and it most definitely was for Matt.

It's my understanding that a "bleeding armadillo cake" is both time consuming to make and delicious to consume, which in reality makes the time consuming part well worth the effort ... well, doesn't it?

We'll let you be the judge next time you have the opportunity to indulge in a piece of "bleeding armadillo cake"!

The Best Garter Songs

The Garter Removal and Toss is a very fun and sometimes “risque” moment in a wedding reception. Depending on how sensitive your family and friends are, you may choose to leave it out of the Reception’s itinerary entirely, or you might simply tone it down a little. Other couples might want to really put on a show and have fun, but remember, this is YOUR wedding, and you can do whatever you like!

Generally, it’s a good idea to choose a song to accompany the Garter Removal and and, if you'd like, a different one for the Toss, and the DJ will play the song and immediately the MC will ask all of the “single” or unmarried men in attendance to come to the dancefloor and stand by as the groom prepares to remove the garter from the Bride’s leg. Once the garter is removed the groom will wait for the MC’s cue and will proceed to toss or launch over the shoulder of the the garter into the group of single men, who will undoubtedly all fight to get as far away from the garter as possible! No matter who catches it, there is always a lot of laughter involved.

Picking the Garter Toss Song is not always so easy, so we’ve compiled this list of the most popular ones chosen by our Groom's for their Garter toss. If you need a reference to listen to, we suggest going to iTunes or Youtube and searching for the song by artist and title, and hopefully you’ll find one of these that you like.

If none of these is truly you, keep digging and think out of the box. We encourage you to pick whatever song you want, cause it’s your wedding!

Music makes the Heart Grow Fonder...

“I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music.” – George Eliot.

A dear friend of mine once told me, “Do what makes your heart sing.” As a vocal performer, that particular phrasing struck a chord with me (puns completely intentional).

Music, for me at least, also serves as memory markers, just as notes on a calendar do. Some music makes me think of my childhood (it’s easy to recall my dad purchasing a new record player BEFORE Christmas so that we could play holiday music all during the season). Other melodies bring back high school while others are famously (or infamously) attached to certain people I’ve known. As of late, I now fondly remember music associated with Heartsong’s many couples.

Thankfully, most couples choose music that reflects THEIR memory markers – and as long as they do that, their reception will make their heart sing.

Several months ago we had the honor of working with a delightful couple - Jojo & Linda (Hi guys!).

Below is a glimpse into why this couple is so special, as captured by Cuong Dinh, their divine videographer, during their fall wedding at Marie Gabriel in downtown Dallas.

Jojo & Linda...where to begin...in a word - LOVE.

They oooooooooooooze love for each other from every pore. You know "that couple" that everyone inspires to be - the couple whose love, and marriage, will last forever. Part of the package with them if they LOVE to travel, they LOVE fun, they LOVE LIFE! Hats off to you two, and much love from L&R!

A bit of background on our other playmates
    Marie Gabrielle is one of the best kept secret in Uptown, and is set amidst a lovely European garden featuring a serene reflecting pool, cloistered groves of mature oaks and alleys of river birch - all in downtown Dallas! It's easy to miss but hard to forget once you've had the opportunity to partake in the delightful dishes served - both for the eyes and the tastebuds. It is truly a picture-perfect spot, and offers an intimate environment which is enchanting for an outdoor evening ceremony.
For the reception, their floor-to-ceiling windows ensure superb garden views from the restaurant, and brings the outside in. Their patio and gardens offer guests a refreshing setting and extraordinary view of the Dallas skyline.

Something Blue at Stonebriar Country Club

Greetings B2B's!

This past Saturdy, two of Frisco's Finest - Brooke & Stew "the V"-took the leap and tied the knot in style, and when I say finest, I mean finest. You could feel the love they share, not only with each other, but with everyone that attended.

The Toasts! The toast were simply amazing, and not a dry eye was left in the house by the time Stew's dad, Stew IV, and Brooke's dad, Harry II, turned the mic over to the newlyweds. Brooke & Stew went on to recognize the reason they were where they were - Four sets of loving grandparents who set things in motion.

Cake? Let them eat cake... and ice cream! This was a first for us during a reception, and what a wonderful idea! Stew really loves icecream, so rather than the southern tradition of groom's cake he opted for Häagen-Dazs super premium Vanilla Bean ice cream to go along with Brooke's beautiful Bride's cake - oh so very yummy with a layer of delicious chocolate caked topped by very, very vanilla.

Stonebriar Country Club is one of our favorite venues. The outdoor setting for weddings is romantic and initmate, and the lounge and banquet hall was simply glorious with the blue uplighting that Brooke & Stew asked us to do for them. The guests simply raved about the menu and the service.

Susan Moore, Private Event Director, was nothing but helpful. Oscar, the Banquet Captain, handled the details during the reception with precision and helped us keep everything flowing. The staff are some of the friendliest and most helpful of all the clubs we work with. From a DJ's standpoint, delivery and setup is easy and efficient. We love it when a bride says, "Our wedding is at Stonebriar Country Club".

Brooke & Stew, THANK YOU for allowing us to be part of your "BIG DAY!" and sensational "Happily Everafter..." to you both!

2 is better than 1

Often it is better to have two of something instead of one … you know, more IS more better. ;-) Just think how these phrases would be if each did not have is complimentary part:

on-off - How would your light switch work otherwise?

love-hate - Don’t we all have some relationship with this?

knick-knack - By themselves, one would be just a gouge and the other would be an aptitude.

ship-shape - Not ship-shapeless or boat-shape … if somebody called me boatshaped instead of ship-shape I’d probably be tempted to fire off a quick retort.

zig-zag - Not only would the “roll your own” paper loose it’s name, a zig w/o a zag is just plain wrong!

ding-dong - Hostess surely wouldn’t just use one of these!

easy-peasey - Easy works by itself, but peasey? Please-y!

flip-flops - Yes we can flip and movies are often flops, but flip-flops are tops around the pool.

The above describes how Lisa and I work together. DJ Lisa crafts a “hodge-podge” music list into a musical masterpiece, while I elevate my role from beginner grocery store announcer ("Cleanup on aisle 5 please...") to experienced Master of Ceremonies, or in words of Peter Merry, author of "The Best Reception... Ever!" an Event Director. Trust me when I say there is a world of difference between an announcer and a professional Wedding Event Director / Master of Ceremonies and your wedding day shouldn't be the day you learn just how much.

TOGETHER to give our brides and grooms THE COMPLETE DJ/MC package. So the next time any of you compare DJs/MCs – be sure you’re comparing “apples-to-apples.” Remember, two apples are better than one!

Just a quick note to say that we had a fantastic time at the Dallas Bridal Show in market hall last weekend. We had the opportunity to speak (literally) hundreds of brides-to-be, catch up with professional friends (some of whom we haven't seen in almost six months), and most importantly, we got a chance to be a part of something BIG - a bridal show - where future brides come in wide-eyed for the sensory overload experience, and try their best to envision every vendor at their wedding reception.

If you have never been to a bridal show, I encourage you to try one. Check the local papers and billboards, internet, and bridal publications for dates and locations for the next one nearest you. As I previously said, check it out. It will be a memorable encounter and money will spent.

What a joy to share someone’s 15th birthday with family and wonderful friends.

Last weekend was our first quinceanera – sign us up for another says me.

Our clients were wonderful to work with, their family and guest were so polite, and the food was out of this world!

Hazy Shade of Summer

Our latest and greatest addition to our dance light arsenal got put through the paces last Saturday. Awesome effects (even on sound activation) and plenty of brightness ... the only thing that could possibly make it better would be a little haze in the air. Enter the hazer.

Boot scoot, rock on, and party hardy ... the reception was going 90 to nothing when you guessed it, the smoke/fire alarm went off.

We've never, ever, set off a smoke/fire alarm. (There's a first time for everything, and tonight was out night!) Our two peace officers (read McKinney policemen) couldn't turn off the alarm and so we waited - for about 10 seconds.

Lisa (running the music) pumped out "Fire" by Ohio Players, "The Fireman" by George Strait and countless other combustibles. The crowd loved it!

They shouted, "Turn it up" (to drown out the alarm), and so we did. Not a single person left the reception, in fact, more got on the floor - fire alarm, dance music and lights, making eccentric dance partners for 30 memorable minutes. Finally, the alarm was switched off "at central."

At the end of the evening we apologized again for the mishap, but were told that there was no need - their smiling faces verified what they were saying.

Lessons learned:

Check with the venue regarding sensitivity of smoke/fire detectors
Always thank my lucky stars for a talented partner
If people are having a great time, floods and wild locusts (or alarms) won't slow'em down
Sometimes we "live" more in four hours than others do in an entire week - it's an occupational hazard I'll gladly accept. :-)

The Dallas Bridal Show is a Comin'

... and we can't wait!

Unlike most people, those folk who simply D-R-E-A-D the sensory overload they suffer at bridal shows, Rob and I crave it. We love meeting new people, catching up with old friends, getting fresh, new ideas and seeing what's the next big trend or new "HOT" color for the coming year!

Guess what? It's time for our lastest "fix" at Dallas Market Hall, July 11-12.

I wonder what we'll learn about this year? Maybe -

Lighting Do's and Don'ts - New ideas on Uplighting
Creating a Personal Monogram that will run throughout your wedding day theme?
Is Gray really the new Brown that's the new Black?
Location, Location, Location - What's in this year? Is it the most unusual spot in town or is it "In" to go retro and have a vintage-inspired wedding?(If you're looking at Retro as your MUST DO STYLE, then the T&P Railroad building in Fort Worth is a MUST SEE! Picture a 30's -40's theme wedding with all your guests in period costumes. Simply amazing. We've got just that coming up in October!)

As always, it's a case of "Zoom! Zoom! Zooooooooooooooom!" A fun-filled race to the finish but a weekend we relish every moment of, from the moment we enter Dallas Market Hall on Friday afternoon until we lock our trailer door and head back to home base in Fort Worth way too late on Sunday evening.

But for now, we are in count down mode and have to wait until NEXT SATURDAY to find out the answers to What's Hot and What's Not!

Oh, and here's the new "event highlights" video hot off the presses just in time for the really big Shooooooooooooooooooow!

What a Whirlwind

WARNING: The below is a total brain-dump ... if you like short and sweet, consider a magazine. If you'd like to live the mobileDJ life vicariously - proceed. Thank you.

Our latest adventures began at the south end of DFW International Airport, and lead to inside and outside of the metroplex. News flash: As vastly different as each set of clients was, they all wanted and deserved the same thing – to have a wonderful and memorable time of their lives.

Time check: 1930’s – 1940’s, cue the aircraft motors and the big band …

* An aircraft museum

* DC-3, 40’s cocktail music, ’09 dancing – what an evening. Kick the tires and light the fire? Nope. Rip a lip.

Remember your school dances? –
Mine were NEVER this much fun!!

* A HUGELY successful school dance

* Pavement pounding punch, glow sticks, faculty YMCA, and LOTS of ecstatic kids – need I say more?

Nestled in Glenrose - Jack London's "Call of the Wild" must have been set here: An intimate wedding at a hunting lodge (complete with deer, wild boar, and rain).
* Nothing gamy about this gig – excellent people and stellar cuisine – Mother Nature couldn’t stop this crowd (yes, our original reception location got rained out, but we moved onto the patio (which made for an intimate gathering) and the party continued.)
* If you’re looking for someplace different – look no further.

Corsicana here we come! -Another HUGE reception (450+) at a VFW
* Gorgeous gobo
* Lots of Texas Country and the biggest Cotton Eyed Joe I’ve ever seen
* Who knew there were that many Aggies in Corsicana?

La Cima in Las Colinas - and it IS at the summit – the 26th floor – very chic. Our bride arrived via a Rolls Royce, married along the canal, and reception reaching towards the skies – bam, bam,bam.
*About the reception: Her elegantly scripted logo looked perfect on the ceiling above the bridal cake, then we switched locations so that it could be easily seen while dancing. Also, the uplighting of the columns looked fantastic.
*It’s a great venue, but if you’re a vendor, you’d better be quick – two hour setup time is the maximum allotted time.

Santo? Where’s Santo? South of Palo Pinto on Hwy 4 is a wonderful place called Santo; and it’s not just the town that quaint and homey, the Santo Community Center (a renovated school house turned very upscale wedding – reception venue) is quite unique. Super easy to get to – great folks to work with and our bride and groom pulled out all the stops. What a hoot!

What’s next? More weddings/receptions – a reunion – a quinceanera– y mas. :-)

Folks, if DJ-ing, Emceeing, and performing vocals weren’t fun - we’d sell the farm and do something really riveting – like watch paint dry or mow the lawn.

Adding, Not Subtracting

Seems everywhere you look, people are cutting back. We’re going to fewer movies, eating in more (or eating out less), cutting back on desserts (okay, you caught me on that one), etc., perhaps it’s time to look at what we can “add to” instead of “cut back” on.

I promise to add more time to my summer by getting up earlier.

I promise to add more fruit to my diet, and more miles when walking the dogs.

I promise to add more rehearsal time to the calendar, and complete a much needed CD.

Can it be done? Yep.

I promise.

Sounds Simple, Right?

Hello all,

Some of our couples may not want to hear this – but – it needs to be said, “Please understand that even though you’ve given your DJ instructions to only play from your song list, and have forbidden your DJ to take request – your guest may not share your musical taste.”

Lisa and I have only been in this situation twice, and both times the bride or groom had to ask us to play from what we knew would work, even if it meant deviating from their original list. We did. People danced (including the DJ). Everyone was happy (especially the B&G), and that's what it's all about.

Here's what's currently on the brain: upcoming wedding ... challenging setup, vocals ready, trailer loaded, and for now the weather forecast should be alright for an outdoor nuptials. If it does rain, I know two DJs/Vocalists that'll teardown and re-setup (inside) quicker than you can say, "slide, glide, slippity-slide."

The "WOW!" Factor!

Hey there!

Rob and I are so excited to have our new website up and running and the blog finally ready to go too.

In working on the new website, I was walking down memory lane and looked at many photos from the last several years and was reminded of just how many fabulous people we have worked with and for since 2000. Aren't digital photos simply amazing? A memory in a moment all in a megabyte.

Our couples are so unique and each deserves a wedding day of a lifetime, so they look for the professionals who bring something different to the table, something a little "out of the box." You know for us that includes the live vocals but there is also the personal services and dedication to making your reception what YOU want. Those are our trademarks, our mind set and bottom line, who we are.

Well, where to begin with our "our of the box" events and vendors... hmmm...

Let's take Chelsea and Brandon, who got married just before Christmas. Their theme was a Winter Wonderland and boy did they do that in style!

Their reception was at McDavid Studios in downtown Fort Worth, which is part of the Bass Hall. It's an AMAZING VENUE filled with lots of sketches and miniatures used in the design and building of the Bass Halls. The Studio itself is a clean slate with great bones, but if not done right it could feel a little sterile with VERY tall, white walls. Cindy, Chelsea's mom, took care of every detail with the help of a Wedding Day Dream Team of vendors and friends.

At the suggestion of James, the event coordinator at McDavid Studio, they went with soft pink gels on the overhead lights to soften the room, then filled one wall with an array of huge snowflakes using a gobo projector. A great starting point. Adding to that more romantic look, the caterer dressed the tables in shades of soft dreamy blues and silvers topping the tables in white the roses, Casa Blanca lilies and hydrangeas and to push it over the top the sparkle of mirrors and crystal - Then the room became a beautiful fairy tale.

Now does that make the event unique? No, but it's well on it's way. Starting with bare and adding with layer upon layer of personalization using an eye for the creative details with panache.

Typically, couples that are planning to have an evening wedding opt to have a plated or buffet dinner, but not Chelsea & Brandon! Again they wanted "out of the box" and they found exactly that in Beyond The Box catering.

Most guests will tell you - it's all about the music and the food! If both are good then it's a HIT. This event was a HIT - The guest were greeted with several savory appetizers plus one or two finger foods, but the food for the evening was ALL DESSERTS - from hand made truffle lollipops, to mini-tiramisus and baby tarts, there was a sensational "smores stop" with tons of gooey, fresh-made marshmallow cream and a decedent chocolate ganache, topped of with a fresh baked graham cracker wedge. Now it's simply not a reception with the grand finale - the Bride's and Groom's cakes.

No dessert junky would call a winter evening complete without coffee right? Picture this – a wonderful COPPER cappuccino coffee bar which should bring fear to local Starbucks baristas and for something different, the yummiest of hot apple ciders.

Now, is this the perfect style reception for everyone? No, probably not, but it should get your creative juices flowing and set your taste buds a buzz, just wishing they could have been apart of such a fun event.
